Travel Right Now: Huatulco, Mexico
WHERE
Huatulco, Mexico
WHY
The rainy season ends this month, leaving this 22-mile coastline in the state of Oaxaca especially lush, with prices still low. A unique mixture of rough topography, Huatulco comprises nine bays (bahías), five of which are relatively undeveloped. Without venturing far, visitors can golf in Bahía Tangolunda, bird-watch in the Sierra Madre del Sur foothills, and shoot the rapids on the Copalita River. Prime swimming spots are busy Bahía Maguey and deserted Bahía Cacaluta. The charming town of Santa María Huatulco has cobblestoned streets, while the modern Santa Cruz is the place for boating. The town of La Crucecita is good for sampling Oaxacan specialties.
HOW
From the airport, take a Transportacion Terrestre van to any of the bahías ($8-$10 per person, depending on the bay).
TABLE
In Bahía Maguey, Ay Caray! serves regional specialties such as pina rellana de mariscos--pineapple stuffed with seafood (52-958-589-7210; entrees, $6-$21).
WEAR
Shorts, sandals, and lots of sunscreen.
WEATHER
Somewhat humid, days in the 80s.
PREP
The Edge of Enchantment (Fulcrum, $30).
P.S.
For a freshwater swim, visit the Copalitilla waterfalls of San Miguel del Puerto.
